Modern Desi – Ancient traditions meet Modern Creations

A personal passion project that evolved into a culturally resonant lifestyle B2C brand.

MISSION: To reimagine everyday items through a South Asian lens by bridging roots and modernity with playful yet meaningful design.

ORIGINS: I launched Modern Desi to fill a void I felt personally in the wedding market. The lack of South Asian inspired bridal shower games, bachelorette gifts and modern wedding related return gifts led to a full fledged brand. I continued to blend the South Asian aesthetic I grew up with into the objects I use every day be it earrings, home décor, or apparel. I wanted to create products that reflect our culture proudly (and playfully) without compromising on everyday practicality.

JOURNEY: 

  • Launch – I started on Etsy in 2019 with handmade favorites like metallic pouches, mosaic tile clutches, sunglasses, Sashes and quirky cultural gifts, which captured South Asian nostalgia and modern style.
  • Expansion – I expanded into a full-fledged online storefront featuring over 350 products ranging from bags, drinkware, stationery, apparel, and home essentials working on end-to-end conception, design, production, manufacturing and retailing of products in bulk.
  • Pivot – I noticed a collection of other brands popping up in the same niche and transformed into a Marketplace platform now housing over 100 Small South Asian brands globally.

CHALLENGES: 

  • Balancing cultural authenticity with product design quality
  • Scaling from handcrafted Etsy items to broader collections required supply chain refinement and digital brand cohesion.
  • Trademarks, licensing and protection of intellectual property. 

PRESENT DAY: 

Modern Desi has grown to over 350 products as a lifestyle line – from apparel and bags to doormats, stationery, and trinkets. We’ve shipped to over 35 countries globally, built partnerships and collaborative products and paved the way for new brands to enter the market. 

RESULTS: 

  • Transitioned from niche Etsy offerings to a robust standalone brand with structured collections and global reach.

  • Products resonate deeply with the Modern Desi audience and are now everyday staples for customers expressing their cultural identity.
